A surprising amount of photosynthesis occurs in the leafy aspects of this complex phylum. Light from even the slowest of wavelengths can be efficiently absorbed. Because of this, they survive best in shade and indirect lighting, away from competition; in turn this forces a heavy reliance on surrounding species to obtain nutrition.
